Challenges for the Telecommunication Services Company

The long term future for the structure of telecommunications industry is not clear.  We have ideas and technologies to produce new services well beyond the second half of the century.  However, the economics are not there yet to justify production and demand generation. Who will be the players in the industry 25 years into the future?

The paper investigates what it will take to stay in the game, and to do it profitably.

A Historical Perspective of the Telecom Industry: Lessons Learned

As the telecommunications industry became more and more competitive, product and service differentiation became less noticeable and pricing wars broke out between carriers across all the market segments.  Most innovations and new product creations were driven by the need to lower the cost of service so as to be able to decrease price, retain the customers and remain profitable.  Yet revenue erosion remained an issue and with the emergence of VoIP and talks about “death of distance,” companies needed to resort to other strategies to keep their revenues growing.

The paper analyzes six strategies which failed and suggests solutions in value chain management theory to avoid losing the battle.

More papers on competitive strategies and value chain management for the telecommunications industry and other sectors will be published in the latter part of the summer.
